E10 petrol

Just returned from Germany where I filled up with E10 petrol as it was a few cents cheaper than the 95 and 98 brands. I felt no discernible difference only the saving in the pocket. On my return I researched the product and found that all Skoda models after 2011 can run on it and that it is the first steps in the introduction of biofuels onto the market. Apparently the UK was requested to introduce it but we negated the offer because 3 million cars can't run on it. But the same problem was inherent in the UK when unleaded petrol was introduced but the transition took place and we take it for granted that all cars can run on it. The arguments against it say that there is a performance loss and mpg suffers and also seals deteriorate - what seals I do not know. I did not find my performance loss and testament to this was the 16% gradient on the road leaving Innsbruck, Austria which the Roomster took in its stride. Here in the UK we should be given the choice of E10 petrol as is saves on the pocket and the environment.

When I was in France some of the pumps had 5 nozzles as had choice of E5 or E10 petrol (plus premium petrol and 2 diesel)

I have noticed that my local station now has pumps marked as E5 (5% ethanol) petrol, or B7 (7% biodiesel)

Although plenty of forecourts have some pumps with just 2 nozzles, petrol and diesel without choice of grades

It will also destroy carb diaphragms and other such rubbery parts.

Couple of people with the same bike as me ran theirs on E10 and it absolutely wrecked them.

Morrisons did E10 ten years ago at 10 pence a litre cheaper than 95 ron unleaded.

I left a mate to fill up a new Hyundai i30 diesel while i went in the shop and he filled the new car with 50 miles covered with E10.

Ethanol mix ( I know not the percentage) was the norm in Zimbabwe over 30 years ago . I would expect that the petrol content would be leaded as most cars ran ok on it. Only problem I found was  on one old  Mazda van with a mechanical fuel pump . Leave it sitting out in the sun and it suffered from vapour lock. ( thinking about  the hot weather in Europe this summer ).

You just need the suitable engines for the fuels being used.

As it is VW Group have stopped building UP!MiiCitigo that run on Petrol, but when they were in Europe they also built ones in South America that liked Ethanol.

Other models as well.

In the late 1980's I worked for an automotive consultancy that developed engines for sale in Brazil, we had a special pump at the in-house fuel station that had E85 (85% Ethanol).

Cant recall the names of the others, too long ago.

I am a long standing shareholder with Ricardo, after probably 15 years of them being worth a fraction of what I paid they only recovered in the last couple of years and eventually nearly doubled, they have taken a real hammering in the last 12 months and I will soon be back to where I started.

Any company whose main business is the internal combustion engine has been having a hard time because of the climate change lobby. The sensible ones have been following the EV and/or fuel cell route.
