Automatic gearbox issues

Recommended Posts

I recently took my Karoq into my local dealership because there were a few issues I wanted sorted before my three year warranty ran out. The main issue was that my DSG automatic gearbox had been changing driving mode by itself, mainly changing to Sport mode whilst driving in Drive, usually after braking. On one occasion it changed to manual mode after stopping to allow another car to come through a tight space. I didn't realise until it failed to change up and looking at the dash realise it was in Manual mode.

The dealership found that when they plugged my car into the diagnostic computer that there were a number of fault codes and it stated that the ECU needed to be replaced. This was ordered and two days later after fitting my car then had even more fault codes so the dealership had to contact the Technical Dept. Two weeks later I am still being fobbed off with stories that they are still waiting for Technical to get back to them. It would seem to me that warranty work takes second place to paid repairwork.

Has anyone else in the Skoda community had similar issues please?

?

Was your car one that required a Software Update already on the Engine or the DQ200 DSG?

It might well be a new MCU (Mechatronic Control Unit) as well as an ECU.

I hope they have you in a nice courtesy car while you are out of your own car.

EDIT.  So there was issues already.   SOFTWARE UPDATES CARRIED OUT.

Time really that Skoda UK get Skoda CZ to move their backends.    I would be getting Kate Laws involved if she is still there suffling papers.

They don't even get back to me when I call for an update. They tell me the new ECU needs to be programmed but they are waiting information from Technical.

I do have a loan car ( VW T Cross ) which is very basic. This is the second time they have put me in a 1.0 car and I have to say I am wishing I had bought one, as the difference in economy is startling with plenty of power.

Is it the Dealership Service Manager not getting back to you?

Best that you speak only with the Dealer Principal and get them to have a Area Warranty Manager involved and a Skoda UK Communication / Resolution Manager.

The Dealership is not the Warranty Underwriter or provider.

The Customer Service Manager has finally called me and once again states that they are waiting for information from Skoda Technical. I have complained bitterly and he has now involved the Deaklership Manager who is taking up the matter with Skoda.

I am not surprised as my car is always worse after its been with them. I  was about to take out extended warranty but instead I think its time for a change, I keep putting it off but this has just cemented my feelings about this dealer. I have only done 12500 miles but they are the worst 12000 miles ever.

Nightmare!

I have the same car as you. 2019 DSG SEL and I can't imagine how annoying it must be.  I am in Devon too.  My dealer is none too great either.

I had to email the dealer principal once due to being so unhappy with the lack of communication and apparent lack of any urgency when I had an issue (unrelated).  He took personal ownership because if you make a formal complaint to the dealer principal it is discussed at their regional team meeting weekly (so I was told). In fact I think I even went to the Dealership HQ and raised it there.

I have just been called to advise that the dealership manager has spoken to the factory and is expecting a call back tomorrow. And so it goes on!! last time my car was in for warranty work they had it for eleven weeks so I suppose theres plenty of time yet,

They just tell you what they think will do. Iv'e lost all faith now. I hope you aren't in Barnstaple too.

Just a quick update on the ECU problem, After a two hour consultation between a Technician at the factory and my dealership technician it has been established that the replacement ECU is in fact faulty and will need to be reordered.

The only problem is that they are on back order and likely to be between seven to ten days. Knowing my luck it will be longer than that. I did ask if my old ECU could be refitted whilst we wait for the new one but apparently that is not  appropriate and there is nothing else that can be done.    Seems once more I have to be patient.

Funnily it is not unheard of that an replacement ECU is said to be faulty when some incompetent has been doing the work of fitting.

Even a new MCU sent then messed up by an incompetent and another MCU & ECU required.

One Scottish Main Dealership even tried saying to my mate he would need to pay for 2 MCU's because their Tech messed up with the new one they received.

Eventually the job was farmed by the Dealership to an Auto Gearbox specialist with 'All the gear'  / Software and more than some ideas but the training and the ability to do a job correctly.

Wow!!!!!!!

I am really concerned that the dealerships do not have the technical ability to correctly diagnose issues or fix them. I saw on one of the posts that a replacement part fitted under warranty does not have any warranty past that of the original. Thats a worry when the dealership has already fitted one faulty unit and does not give confidence for the future.

There are some cases in the distant past with DQ200's and Twincharger Engines that Briskoda members that had failures in the period of the Manufacturers Warranty and then a repeat failure that they managed to get Skoda to pay for an Extended Warranty on the vehicle.

(That is just Skoda / VW Group Pay themselves that is, on something that they should not actually then need to pay more out on.)

Those days are gone well and truly.    There is the case that if you pay a bit towards the cost then you get the 2 years part and labour cover.

Some have been lucky that they were screwed out of a 10% contribution then another failure and they have the warranty over.

Best thing is.

Buy a Skoda Warranty at the end of the Manufacturers Warranty.    They can not say 'Known issue' and try and reject the Warranty Claim as the Approved Repairer had repaired the vehicle / DSG.    It should be fit for purpose not still with faults or risk of premature failure,

From kettles to central heating boilers, from microwaves ovens to washing machines, that's true of everything you buy. If a part is changed under warranty, then it's the original warranty that applies.

When you buy a product you buy it with say a 3yr warranty - that's the contract you enter. If something fails at 35months and is replaced under warranty, as per your original contract you will only have 1 month warranty remaining on that replacement part.

The reality with DQ200,s now for a decade is that some that have had the lemons that they originally bought to keep trade them in for another car before the 3 years warranty in the UK expires.  These cars enter the dealer network or just the car trade in general and becaomd someone else's problem.    Even becoming Skoda / VW group approved used cars and then getting a Skoda Approved Used car 12 or 24 month warranty.     This has happened with 1.5tsi,s already .    It happens with other manufacturers as well.       Sad really for some that might by private or maybe at a trader and get 3 months warranty or no warranty.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry Guys I meant to post an update but after storms we lost Broadband until today.

I got my car back last week and the replacement ECU seems to have sorted the DSG issues although it doesn't seem to have improved the economy. I did however get a completely different story from the Service guy than what I was told by the Customer Service manager about what went wrong in the process, but I guess I will just have to be thankful that I am back on the road. They could not find anything wrong with the Electric hatch although twenty minutes after leaving the dealership I opened the boot and it failed to latch again, but I couldn't get it to repeat so once again I will just have to keep an eye on it.

One interesting thing I wanted to mention. You guys may remember that last year I suffered a bad water leak into the car which took several weeks to trace and fix. Well the loan car ( VW T Cross ) they gave me almost certainly had the same problem as every morning that we had a frost the inside of the windscreen froze up as badly as the outside requiring scraping to remove it. This happened three mornings in a row so when I collected my car I mentioned it to the service guy. He told me that it was the second of their fleet which had suffered the same way so it does look as though there is a problem either with the fitting of the windscreens or maybe the shape of the car frames do not match the curviture of the screens.  I don't suppose it will ever be published but it is rather off putting that it seems to be a VAG issue. I remember some years ago when Ford had a problem with cracked windscreens which turned out to be a couple of spotwelds which were distorting the windscreen aperture.

Anyway my door handles do not stick any more and my seatbelts now return properly which apparently was something to do with the 'B' pillar trims which were replaced. Now it's time for the 1st MOT - I wonder if it will pass?
