Brand new Scala SOS emergency call fault

Hi everyone,

I'm a brand new Scala owner, having taken delivery of the car just a few days ago. So far I really like it, but on return from its first decent run yesterday - a 50+ mile run into London - I got a message popping up "Error: emergency call. Please visit workshop". The yellow triangle comes on the dash and the SOS button lights up.

Having done some research it seems this is a pretty widespread issue with VW group cars, although it sounds like it can cause other issues in some instances. Fortunately on yesterday's experience it didn't noticable affect any other functions that I could see, although the speed warning chime I'd set up did seem to stop.

Am I right to feel a little annoyed that the recall wasn't applied to the car before I picked it up? I've now booked it in, but not for a fortnight as the local dealer is booked up.

Have any other Scala owners experienced this? I'd be interested to know how long a fix it requires.

Dan

Call Skoda Assist and they can arrange uplift of the car and delivery of a loan car. Or the dealer can send out a Master Tech with all the gear and more than an idea.  You do not need to be inconvenienced because Skoda/VW and dealerships keep handing over vehicles with Faulty Software.  There are even DVLA recalls over SOS issues.      Skoda Secret Service Service Campaigns are not Recalls even if Skoda Dealership staff might call them that.'recall actions' TPI,s.   Unless they contact registered Keepers they are not RECALLS http://skoda-auto.com/services/recall-actions

This morning the SOS error isn't present, which is typical of what some others seem to be reporting. It's interesting that some also report the issue specifically when they drive into London. The message appeared briefly when I was heading in but quickly disappeared. It reappeared and stayed on at what I imagine was a similar location when I was heading back out. I wonder if there's something about certain locations that sets off an error. There were a series of tunnels in the area.

I have a fortnight until the service, so I'll see whether it reappears in different circumstances in the meantime.

On the Karoq forum, all very similar threads.

The London issue is the one I consistently get.

I did send Skoda the following location statement when the fault occurs;

".....If it is any help, the area where this seemed to happen most for me  is 51.511227, -0.013692.
In the real world rather than the ridiculous Skoda lat/long system this equates to A13 East India Dock Road 177-185 or Post Code E14 0EA."

I also mentioned that this is potentially a safety issue - imagine car breaks down at some point after this message... SOS call disabled, Bluetooth hands free not working and you are stuck on a new smart motorway.....

@stewartv That's interesting as it was on the way to / from the Greenwich peninsula that I had the issue crop up - not in exactly the same location as you as I was on the A12 / A102 but not far away. I reckon it was around there that it cropped up. I wonder what's going on there that's causing these issues? Something in the airwaves presumably.
If it is extremely localised then I'm thinking that if it doesn't occur again before my appointment that I might just cancel the trip to the dealer. I don't generally frequent Docklands so if it doesn't happen elsewhere I can live with that.

@e-Roottoot Thanks for the links. I had Googled the issue and found some VW-group chat elsewhere but hadn't come across the discussions on here, so that's useful.

Factory have reproduced the issue and got a fault code - software fix in development at last.

It has ben acknowledged that it is a location based problem which is why some are more affected than others.

For anyone else following this issue, I spoke to the dealer this week and they have been notified that a fix is in the works. Apparently it has to do with a lack of 5G signal, which explains why it tends to occur in certain locations. To date, I've only experienced the issue when heading towards Greenwich.

a lack of 5G signal,

In other words, Skoda have been "simply clever" and fitted cars with a technology that simply doesn't exist everywhere.

Interesting thread!

I faced the issue with my brand new Scala bought earlier this month. The SOS message came up in the London Surrey Quays area (Docklands) - so not too far from the Greenwich peninsula. Unfortunately the error has not gone away when leaving the area.

I was told that the fix was coming out on 20/6 and so booked myself in at the garage yesterday. They rang me earlier today to say that the download has taken absolutely ages (I think they started it the day before!) and the next step is to install it. They couldn't tell me how long it'll take as apparently I'm the first one to have it (I assume at this particular garage!). I'll hopefully get an update tomorrow...

As upthread, this could be the satellites being occluded by buildings. It's less clear why the system doesn't lock them up properly when it has line of sight again.

Pleased to report that the software update seems to have worked and I didn't have any issues in the 90 min journey home. As I was the first one to receive the update, the dealership said they tested it more than normal which is reassuring. Fingers crossed that it doesn't come back!

I got my new Scala back in April and have done some 2500 miles; a trip down to Devon, another up to Newcastle and a couple of times over to Thanet, plus the normal running around locally. The car performs perfectly and I am very impressed with the 7 speed DSG gearbox. The last time I owned an automatic it was a Vauxhall Viva with just 3 gears. My bug bear is the Infotainment which is so extremely irritating that I have it turned off most of the time.

On this topic, coming home from Thanet the other night on the M25 near the M23 junction to Gatwick, the "SOS emergency visit workshop" message flashed up on the right hand side of the digital instrument panel. It was gone in a flash but a yellow triangle came on in the top bar and "SOS" in yellow in the bottom bar. Unusually for the M25 we were all going along at 70ish, 4 lanes. In a bit of a panic I checked the oil and water temperatures, normal, no other warning signs, no funny noises or smells. I left the M25 at Reigate and drove the 20 odd miles home, no trouble at all. The following morning in daylight I checked to car over and started the engine, no triangle, no SOS, oil and water levels correct.

Now I have read this topic I have emailed the dealer as a warrantee claim and they have booked me in for a fix. We shall see. This is not the first software glitch. I had to take it back in the first fortnight as it would not recognise me as "Prime User". Since then Skoda Assist features have turned themselves off a couple of times as well.

HI, I just wanted to add to this thread, as I've had problems also with the ecall feature on my 2020 Scala.  When I did a scan I had the following codes:

1)

 2566

HEX(A06)

B105413

000

VAG-Text: GPS antenna Open circuit

DTC-Text: GPS-Antenna - Interruption

Fehlerart: Circuit Open

2)

13631561

HEX(D00049)

B200049

000

VAG-Text: Ctrl. module faulty

DTC-Text: Control unit defectiveAnalog circuitry

Fehlerart: Internal Electronic Failure

The open circuit fault triggered at the same time that I saw the yellow warning on the dash.  The open circuit fault is now passive and the e-call button has the green illumination so appears to be functioning.  I always have the "ctrl module faulty fault" in the memory,  I asked the dealer and they said that there was no fault which puzzled me!

In case anyone has something similar here are the ECU details:

SW-part number:   5WA035282

HW-part number:  5WA035282

SW version:   0083

BL-version:  0025

HW-version:  H14

Hi, I just though I'd update you.  The MMI started going off together with the E-call warning so I took it to the dealer.  This time they diagnosed a faulty control module.

The ECU details (0x75) are now:

SW-part number:   5WA035282

HW-part number:  5WA035282

SW version:   0092

BL-version:  0012

HW-version:  H14

Hopefully this has fixed the problem!

This is my first response to a subject on Briskoda since joining. I have enjoyed reading the many responses over the past few years and would like to share my experiences with our latest Skoda Kamiq Ambition purchased two years ago from our local dealer here in south west France. This replaced a Skoda Yeti Ambition 1.4 tsi with a dsg transmission which we had for five years with trouble free motoring except for the replacement of the rear wiper motor and rear door lock both replaced under warranty.

The Kamiq is now just two years old from new fitted with the one litre tsi engine with dsg transmission. It has been a very comfortable car to drive and has plenty of power for both city and highway driving. But this really great vehicle is completely spoilt and let down by the electronic gremlins. It has frequently been the victim of the SOS light coming on and instructing me to drive to a workshop. Then I had the control screen blackout completely ,followed recently during a rain storm the front wipers stopped working for 24 hours before working again. Our local Skoda  garage have been very supportive and fixed the problems but since the are a VW and Skoda service specialist I can see that these problems are also on other models.

My wife used to enjoy driving the Yeti but is not so happy with the digital controls on the Kamiq. We are now thinking of replacing this with a secondhand Yeti and if not the new Dacia Duster 1.3 automatic.

Mine went in december after buying in september, they tried replacing the auxillary battery Friday, took 2 days trying that, now decided its the control module, so waiting for that to be fitted, workshop for 3 working days, I can only imagine how much they would have charged.

Really think I should change it for something without these issues.
