Anyone fitted R15 wheels to Mk2 Fabia VRS

Recommended Posts

I'm sick of the crashy ride on the awful road surfaces we have to put up with in the UK nowadays, and after a couple of recent pinch flats caused by particularly bad potholes I was thinking of moving to a smaller diameter wheel to enjoy the benefits of a deeper sidewall.

The spare is a 195/55R15 on a (J6/ET43) steel rim and that size tyre is obviously very close (0.4%) in circumference to the standard tyre (205/40R17), but just wondering if the clearance might be a bit tighter with an alloy rim - anyone running R15 alloys and if so any problems?

Welcome to the forum.

Someone might know exactly what 15" alloys will not cause an issue.

I would go for 16" ones maybe, as fitted to a Fabia Reaction or similar.

There is a good search function on the forum and over the 12 years most subjects on Mk2 vRS have been covered.

Do you really want to go to 195 tyres?  I hope they will be decent ones on a 180PS car with a DQ200 DSG.

& that will need to be ones of the correct speed / load rating.

@Carlstonwill love you and tell you how good narrower tyres are and give you all the scores on the doors.

As you say the Spare Wheel is a steel 15" and fits.

Plenty run 16" as winter or all year around tyres.

*Briskoda For Sales have 16" Wheels / Tyres of the correct fitment for sale occasionally that would be fine.*

With the 17" Gigaro fitted 215/40 R 17 or 205/45 R 17 are a good choice if you want to keep the OEM wheels.

15's will work but albeit they will look like your running on buttons. The problem with the MK2 is that its not just the heavy standard giggaro alloys wheels that are the issue but every part of the suspension components are **** and offer a harsh ride.

What tyre's are you running? I found running lighter wheels and softer pilot sport 4's felt a good bit better than the previous kumho's I ran.

Thanks for this - I did try the search function but didn't pick this thread up - second post answers my question 👍

I am aware of the change to the car's handling dynamics that fitting this profile tyre will cause, and would never fit tyres that did not conform to the speed and loading requirements (as well as decent quality).

The suggestion that a 195 profile might be insufficient though - 🤣

Found a cheap set of R15 alloys locally so will try to pick them up next week and report back on my experience - will try to brace myself for the hysterical laughter of other Fabia VRS drivers when they see my 'buttons'.

You can reset the steering assist to reduce it when you fit these narrower tyres and the steering feels very light.

What i suggest is that the sister twincharger cars come with 215/40 R 17 tyres and just the Fabia got 205/40 R 17's.

You might notice unless you have 195's with good grip on less than perfect surfaces that there is more flashing of the TC light,

but only if giving it a bit of a boot.

They might be a bit better where aquaplaning could be a risk.

Here if you think you might want to change the setting of steering assist to suit the tyres fitted.

6.5J is ideal for 195/55R15, 205/50R15, 205/55R15.

195/55R15 would be the most sensible size for the Fabia MK2.

205/50R15 and 205/55R15 are rare tyre sizes. However, Uniroyal Rainsport 5 tyres are available in both these sizes. 195/55R15 gives a much better choice of tyres, especially all-season tyres such as the Michelin CrossClimate 2.

Oversize 205/45R17 tyres will fit the below rims, but check that it won't rub. However, 17" rims will make the 288mm front brake discs on the RS look rather small.

Compared to 205/40R17, 205/45R17 has a higher load index so you could reduce the tyre pressures by 3 psi to 4 psi. This will help improve the ride comfort.

Narrower 6.5J rims compared to 7J rims will also help the ride comfort, as the narrower rims will help the sidewalls flex more easily when going over bumps.

Choosing all-season tyres compared to UHP summer tyres will again help the ride comfort, as UHP summer tyres have stiff sidewalls to help increase lateral grip so don't flex as easily.
